Multiversus is a free-to-play action title developed by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Games. It is a Warner Bros-themed fighting game that features a roster of characters consisting of the company's various media properties and franchises across cartoons and live-action TV shows.
Just like with Brawlhalla or Gang Beasts, Multiversus is a platform fighter that takes cues from the immense popularity of Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo Switch. What makes it stand out is the fact that it features characters from beloved shows like Looney Tunes and various entities from DC Comics.
What is it?
Multiversus is what would happen if Warner Bros pooled its resources and decided to create a platform fighter akin to Super Smash Bros or Brawlhalla. As you would imagine, the company has a lot of media properties and franchises across various mediums, and some of them will be making an appearance in the game, including Bugs Bunny, Batman, and others. Even Arya Stark from Game of Thrones will be here.
When it comes to gameplay, Multiversus takes plenty of cues from Super Smash Bros and its mechanics. There are plenty of modes to choose from, 1v1, 2v2, and a free-for-all — though the last one is not available for online play. Similarly, you will be fighting in various stages, with the goal of knocking opponents out of the boundaries of the arena.
With the game's cross-play support, you can connect and play with friends regardless of what platform you play it on. Moreover, cross-progression allows you to pick up where you left off on any device seamlessly. Please note that to utilize these cross-play and cross-progression features, you must have a WB Games Account. This ensures that your content and progress are consistently shared across all supported platforms.
Free content vs. premium gameplay
In addition to its diverse character lineup, MultiVersus' maps are equally impressive, transforming legendary realms into vibrant battlegrounds. You can brawl in Batman’s Bat Cave, Jake and Finn’s Treefort, and the iconic Throne Room from Game of Thrones. What's more, new maps are introduced frequently, ensuring the excitement never fades and providing diverse backdrops for players to demonstrate their skills.
The game offers a split between free content and a Premium Battle Pass. Free content caters mainly to casual players who may not be ready to invest in the game but still wish to enjoy some customization and extra challenges. In contrast, the Premium Battle Pass enhances the gaming experience by providing a wealth of additional rewards and opportunities. Its most appealing aspect is that you can earn enough Gleamium — the in-game currency — to purchase the next season’s pass.
Perk, Fighter, and Prestige currencies
On top of Gleamium, three more replacement currencies have made their debut on Multiversus, namely Perk, Fighter, and Prestige. With the Perk currency, players can acquire perks to strengthen their character’s combat prowess, whereas the Fighter currency can be spent on recruiting new characters. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to obtain Perk and Fighter currencies. These include participating in in-game events, joining other players or friends in Rifts mode, improving your Account or Character Mastery, and leveling your Battle Pass.
Finally, there’s the Prestige currency, which is spent on unlocking Prestige cosmetic items. Unlike the Perk and Fighter currencies, players can only earn Prestige currency through cosmetic items — all have unique types and rarity levels that influence the amount of Prestige currency you will receive.
A great choice if you love WB characters
At the surface, it seems that there are plenty of interesting things to expect with Multiversus as it might just be the real Super Smash Bros. Its cross-progression support, vibrantly designed arenas, and diverse roster of beloved Warner Brothers characters make it a top-tier choice for fans of the company’s media properties. Although the game has its flaws, this is one to keep tabs on for further updates.
